Foolish no more...

APRIL FOOL - Is how I feel today. It's a feeling that I am slowly trying to get away from. Six years ago my father passed away; the day after April first, the day I had come back home from visiting him in the hospital. For two weeks I was a constant presence and fixture of the ICU waiting room. Camping out: sleeping alone in a freezing room, cushions lined on a floor, eating out of vending machines and bird baths from a restroom sink, and unshaved. But I was there. I was there visiting my dying father in the Abilene ICU Hospital for two weeks hoping beyond hope. Those last few years was the closest my father and I ever came to having a real relationship of sharing ideas and understanding.
Yet... I went home to take care of some paper work for FMLA, the day after April 1st 2008, I got word he was "gone".  I'm beginning to feel less "foolish" but I still miss him greatly. He told me once that he was proud of me, and then again in the hospital just days before... I... I... know I haven't lived up to his high standard, but I see his face in the mirror every time I shave.

The Passing Moments...

I was just checking my email account on my new computer. Interesting how the PC format and larger screen presents things differently.
I was looking through all the emails I had gotten from my Dad. Wow, It was nice "hearing" his (written) voice again! I guess it's natural to say this, but just wish we had said more things to one another. Miss you Dad can't be said enough.
To express our true feelings to one another seems regretful in the hindsight when they are no longer with us....

DAD

TOMORROW will be five years since my father passed away, and though I do not love or miss him any less; the pain of his loss eases only in the joy of the memories of the good times that come to mind. As such it should. I use to really beat myself up over having returned home from staying with him two weeks in the hospital only to learn he passed after I left. April "fool's Day" is always difficult for me, because I felt so foolish for leaving him. But foolish is allowing myself not to be proud of my tenacity in staying both night and day with him in the ICU (or sleeping on the waiting room floor) for two weeks. *sigh* From here on out I should just say... "I miss you Dad" and leave it at that.
